Hunters by sight or scent — independent, sometimes vocal, and built to follow their nose or their eyes.

Common breeds

Beagle, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Dachshund, Greyhound, Whippet, Afghan Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Irish Wolfhound.

What to expect

• Strong prey drive — can't always be trusted off-leash
• Loud and expressive — bays and howls are common
• Independent — they were bred to work apart from humans
• Athletic, especially the sighthounds
• Often more food-motivated than handler-motivated
