Common breeds

Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Pug, Yorkshire Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Pekingese, Japanese Chin, Italian Greyhound.

What to expect

• Small size makes them apartment-friendly
• Often bond intensely with one person
• Need socialization to avoid small-dog reactivity
• Some have grooming-heavy coats
• Many have brachycephalic (flat-faced) breathing concerns
